Since April 1993, Geophysical Applications has completed more than 1,000 projects including the following examples:

EA ENGINEERING, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, INC. - Bedrock Depth Profiling and Fracture Identification, Davisville NCBC facility, Davisville, Rhode Island

Seismic refraction, resistivity and borehole geophysical surveys over a period of ten years helped EA construct detailed bedrock elevation contour maps across large areas for this site. Borehole geophysical logs yielded information regarding bedrock fractures, including depths, size, and orientation. Heat pulse flowmeter surveys revealed which fractures were hydraulically active, and acoustic televiewer images identified fracture dip angles and downdip azimuths.

CH2M HILL. - Bedrock Depth Profiling and Fracture Identification, Air National Guard Base, Slatersville, Rhode Island

Seismic refraction, VLF and borehole geophysical surveys over a period of four years helped CH2M HILL determine bedrock elevations and fracture locations across this site. A fracture trace analysis provided information regarding regional bedrock fractures. VLF and borehole geophysical logs yielded information regarding hydraulically active bedrock fractures, including depths, size, and orientation. GPR and metal-locating surveys located utilities, leach field piping, abandoned USTs and dry wells.

ENSR CORPORATION - UST Detection, Northeastern U.S.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic surveys at more than 30 commercial properties located in New England, New York, and New Jersey helped ENSR’s clients minimize the risks associated with purchasing or foreclosing properties containing USTs. Results from some surveys disclosed previously unknown USTs, and other sites were shown to be free of USTs that were once permitted for those sites.

LOUIS BERGER INTERNATIONAL - Bedrock Depth Profiling, Vietnam

Seismic refraction profiling measured bedrock depths at portals for a proposed highway tunnel near Danang, Vietnam. Survey results were confirmed by selected soil and bedrock borings. The combined geophysical and drilling exploration programs enabled the engineers to relocate the proposed portals to more favorable tunneling areas.

GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - Till Depth Profiling, and Buried Object Detection

Geophysical Applications conducted magnetic and GPR surveys at two confidential sites to check for buried ferrous objects, possibly including steel drums. Extensive seismic refraction profiling at one site helped GE’s environmental engineering consultant contour the top of a dense glacial till layer, to guide placement of subsequent monitoring wells.

CODY EHLERS GROUP - Bedrock Depth Profiling and Fracture Identification

Seismic refraction surveys at an industrial site near New York City helped Cody Ehlers Group measure bedrock depths across a backfilled former quarry. Borehole caliper and fluid temperature logging in an existing water-supply well disclosed high-yield fracture zones. This economical survey enabled Cody Ehlers Group to select groundwater sampling intervals within the 600-foot well, in the absence of geologic logs or other data.

FLUOR-DANIEL, INC. - Landfill Characterization

Fluor-Daniel contracted Geophysical Applications to conduct ground penetrating radar (GPR) profiling at a Superfund landfill site in Kingsville, Ohio. GPR data, collected in Level B health and safety conditions, helped to estimate the volume of fill material and number of buried drums that still required removal. GPR records also showed that a clay cap remained intact outside the excavation area.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER COMPANY - Bedrock Aquifer Characterization

Borehole geophysical and video logging identified water-bearing bedrock fractures at an industrial landfill in central Maine. Borehole video, self potential (SP), single-point resistance (SPR), natural gamma, caliper, fluid temperature, and fluid resistivity logs were recorded in uncased borings to locate bedrock fractures contributing to groundwater flow. These logs guided well screen installation at depths appropriate for sampling the bedrock aquifer and possible leachate.

ERM NEW ENGLAND, INC. - Landfill Siting Study

Geophysical Applications performed seismic refraction and VLF surveys at a confidential Massachusetts location to help assess that site's suitability for a proposed landfill. Seismic cross sections interpreted using delay-time and GRM methods determined bedrock depths and competency. GRM velocity analysis also confirmed the position of a fault, inferred by others from aerial imagery. Correlating the seismic cross sections and VLF profiles identified additional possible fractures that were confirmed by test pits and borings.
